That night, we reviewed the rules of Mauritania. First, alcohol was forbidden, so asking for it was useless and too risky to accept it from the black market. Second, Ramadan was very strict here, so we could not sneak a bite during the day unless hidden in our hostel room. Third, atheism was illegal, so we were better off avoiding any local discussion of religion.
