What Happened at Wimbledon 2024
A wrap-up of the year’s third Grand Slam tournament
In 2023, Carlos Alcaraz needed five sets to get the better of Novak Djokovic at the Wimbledon Championships final. This year, the Spaniard needed only three sets.
A 6–2, 6–2, 7–6 (4) demolition of the Serb not only ensured the Spaniard a successful defense of his All England title, but also a second straight Grand Slam title following his win at the French Open last month. Alcaraz has now won a total of four Grand Slam singles titles, and also becomes the youngest man to win at Wimbledon and the French Open in the same year.
At 21 years and 70 days, Alcaraz is not only a four-time major champion, but also the youngest player in the Open Era (1968 and after) to have won the French Open and Wimbledon back-to-back in the space of five weeks. The Spaniard also became only the eighth player to win the first four Grand Slam men’s singles finals of his career.
Alcaraz is also the third-youngest player in the Open Era to retain his Wimbledon title, after Boris Becker (18 years, 227 days) and Björn Borg (21 years, 26 days). With Spain getting the better of England in the Euro 2024 final at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, it made for a perfect day for the 21-year-old and his country.
