Sinner Emerged the Winner Down Under… For a Second Straight Year
The Italian retained his title in an emphatic manner
Jannik Sinner’s first ever Grand Slam title was won at the Australian Open last year. The Italian returned to Melbourne to defend his title in an emphatic manner.
The top seed ensured back-to-back Australian Open titles with a comprehensive 6–3 7–6 (4) 6–3 win over Alexander Zverev. That the second-seeded German failed to create a single break point in the match showcases the extent of the Italian’s dominance.
By winning again in Melbourne, the 23-year-old became the first Italian to lift three Grand Slam trophies. He becomes the fifth player in the Open Era to win three consecutive hard-court Grand Slam tournaments, and the first since Novak Djokovic in 2015–16.
Besides, Sinner is also the eighth player in the Open Era to win each of the first three Grand Slam finals he has contested. Conversely, Zverev picked up the unenviable record of being the seventh man in the Open era to lose his first three Grand Slam finals, having also lost in the finals at the US Open (2020) and French Open (2024).
