With the year’s final Grand Slam tournament in Flushing Meadows getting over, here’s a quick look back at the results
In the final analysis, and in what can be termed as a pleasant coincidence, the two players who began by winning the year’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, also happened to take home the honors at the US Open, the year’s last major competition.
Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus and Jannik Sinner of Italy emerged as the champions in the women’s singles and the men’s equivalent, respectively, at both the hard court majors. The duo happen to be the first players to win the singles titles at both the Australian Open and the US Open since 1988, when Steffi Graf and Mats Wilander achieved the rare feat.
Italy’s sudden rise in the game was further substantiated by its historic first success in the mixed doubles’ category.
Anything but hard for Aryna
Aryna Sabalenka, who had been reduced to tears following her loss to Coco Gauff in last year’s final, had tears this time as well. Fortunately for her, they were tears of joy.
